Complete set of 148 lovely butterscotch bakelite mahjong tiles, including the 4 blanks. Mahjong ("Sparrows" in Chinese, and also called "mahjong rummy"), is played by 4 persons using 144 tiles. The tiles are drawn and discarded until one player secures the winning hand. Mahjong has recently experienced a resurgence in popularity, with a number of clubs operating around Aotearoa. In one NZ family since its purchase in Auckland in the late 1920s, this set has been looked after well so the tiles show minimal wear. From my research, butterscotch bakelite sets appear to have been crafted in China during the early-mid 20th Century. Each tile measures 3cm long x 2.2cm across x 1.4cm deep. This set comes with the tiles in their original felt boxes (see photos) and some other playing accoutrements (dice etc). The four vintage, well-made, double level wooden tile holders are included. There is also a vintage Mahjong instruction booklet included (if desired) and four vintage scoring cards (if desired). The case is included. It is vintage and fits the set but is not original to the set. Price includes postage. Postage for NZ addresses only. Pick-up at Warkworth store is available.
